Ladies Open Bonspiel Canceled
Regretfully we must cancel the 2018 Ladies Open Bonspiel due to lack of entries. We have struggled to fill this bonspiel over many years and this year we only had 6 entries at deadline. We have tried several different formats, put together some excellent entertainment over the years and tried our best to inject value and fun into this spiel. As of now, unless a committee of members steps forward to work on this spiel and help format the spiel and recruit teams, we will permanently remove this bonspiel from the calendar.
We have had a lot of interest in an open bonspiel format that we will be taking a hard look at for next year that could find a home in January. We would love your input into this and all our bonspiels going forward as it is my contention that bonspiels that are run by volunteer committees are our best chance for success.
Bonspiels ad a lot of value to our club not only in terms of revenue but in promoting the social aspect of our great sport. Bonspiels give members a chance to meet and curl against other members they may not ever meet and exposes our club to teams from other clubs. Bonspiels introduce new curlers to our sport and serve as excellent member recruitment events.
I look forward to hearing any ideas you may have and working towards developing a full calendar of great bonspiel opportunities.
Also, the 4 Seasons Men’s Shirtsleeve Bonspiel is starting to fill up. Get your team entered soon!!!! Don’t have a team and still want to curl, let the office know as we often have teams looking for players.
Travelers Curling Club Championships
The Travelers Insurance Company sponsor a Curling Club Championship geared toward the regular club curler. This Championship will give grass roots curling teams from every corner of the country an opportunity to compete in Southern Alberta, Provincial and National level competition. Club curlers are those who enjoy the sport recreationally, supporting club leagues on a regular basis from September to April. These teams now have a major venue to demonstrate their skill against other curling clubs in their region, in their province and in their country.
With Lethbridge set to host the 2017 Travelers Southern from March 23 – 25, 2018 we thought we should send out the qualifications and get an idea of how many of our teams would be interested in trying to qualify for this event. The winners of the Southerns will compete in the Alberta Playdowns in the fall of 2018 with the winner going to the Canadians sometime in November 2018.
Please let me know if you are interested in competing in this championship and depending on the interest level we can look at developing a qualifying event. The eligibility rules are attached to this email.
